Destroyit 2604 Cross Cut Shredder - The Legacy

By John Shedd March 26, 2019

The Evolution of the Destroyit 2604 Cross Cut Shredder

The story of the Destroyit 2604 shredder is one of innovation and longevity. It’s a celebration of good sense engineering that recognizes not only what a shredder should be, but what a shedder shouldn’t. A shredder doesn’t need to make coffee, or connect to your office network—it only needs to shred. A shredder doesn’t need an iPad style control panel, or have an LED screen that remembers your name—it only needs to shred. MBM utilizes the most effective and user friendly technology in the shredder industry, while steering clear of Frankenstein features that… well… don’t shred. If it’s a shredder you need, than one of the most popular shredders on the market is the 2604 CC. It’s popular not because it looks like a rocket ship, but because it is one of the most dependable and efficient office shredders ever made. Before looking in depth at the 2604, we first have to understand its gene pool. The manufacturer, MBM Corporation, is first and foremost manufacture of shredders. This is where their primary focus lies and this is how they have raised their family of products. Other products that MBM does make include paper cutters and paper folders, both of which are also known for lasting years of heavy duty use. The Destroyit 2604 is no exception to MBM’s strong line of quality craftsmanship. The 2600 series of shredder has been tested for over 15 years in offices, and actually comes from a long line of refinements here’s where the dreamy harp music kicks in).

Destroyit 2600 Shredder – Great Great Grandfather of the 2604 CC

The Destroyit 2604’s Great Great Grandfather was the model 2600. Not to be confused with the 2600 smc and the 2600/2 smc, which are new machines, the 2600 cross cut marks the first of this series of shredders. It was hoped that this model would represent the middle of the full Destroyit shredder lineup. The 2600 quickly became a favorite of their shredders. This model features an ultra slim profile that could fit almost anywhere. One unique feature of this shredder is the rear feed opening that allows users to deposit trash without shredding. This effectively doubled the shredder as a waste bin. What is remarkable about this model is that they are occasionally still found operating in offices today. That high of quality for a first run model is an extraordinary achievement.
  • Capacity: 9-12 sheets per pass
  • Speed: 24 ft. / min
  • Weight: 99 lbs.
  • Hp: 1 hp
  • Throat Width: 10 ½”

Destroyit 2601 Shredder – Great Grandfather of the 2604CC

MBM Destroyit 2604 Great Grand FatherThe 2604’s Great Grandfather was the 2601. The 2601 marked the time when MBM put an even greater emphasis on the user interface of the shredder. The 2601 offered photo cell technology that allowed auto start/stop when paper entered the throat. This innovation has now become a standard aspect of shredder technology in nearly all shredders today. Other user interface improvements were also added color coded symbols that used to be called “pilot lights” were implemented to give feedback to the operator and make the shredding process even more simple. As far as the performance and internal components, there have been very little changes As you can see by the picture, they look almost identical.
  • Capacity: 9-12 sheets per pass
  • Speed: 24 ft. / min
  • Weight: 99 lbs.
  • Hp: 1 hp
  • Throat Width: 10 ½”

Destroyit 2602 Shredder – Grandfather of the 2604 shredder by MBM

MBM Destroyit 2602 Shredder with ShelfThe 2602 is the 2604’s Grandfather. One noticeable addition was the folding paper shelf that worked well with continuous forms. The 2602 marked a distinctive change for the Destroyit 2604 cross cut shredder family. As shredding grew more and more mandatory for almost all office documents, MBM engineers opted to remove the drop in slot for non shredded documents. This gave them more room on the shredder head to focus on a larger motor, raised cutting shaft, and other improvements. The increase in shredding meant that the 2602 some improved performance, and that’s exactly what they did. By increasing the speed and almost doubling the sheet capacity this shredder was a huge improvement over previous versions and was a tremendous success with customers. This was such a strong model that many 2602 shredders are regularly in operation today.
  • Capacity: 16-18 sheets per pass
  • Speed: 28 ft./min.
  • Weight: 105 lbs
  • Hp: 1
  • Throat Width: 10 ½”

Destroyit 2603 Shredder – the Father of the 2604 Cross Cut

The Destroyit 2604’s father was the 2603 shredder. Now we are in the immediate family of the 2604, and that is easy to see from the pictures, as there is a striking resemblance. The 2603 cross cut was a complete redesign of 2602 as far as looks and feature sets. The shelf was discontinued do to a decrease in continuous forms, and an entirely new interface was designed. The classic rocker switch was replaced with the new lighted paddle controls that included a more user friendly indicator system. This new indicator system was attached to MBMs Safety Protection System, another big improvement over previous models. A plastic safety shield was introduced that completely protected users from feeding unwanted materials into the cutting throat without sacrificing the smooth feeding that Destroyit shredders have become known for. The outward appearance of the shredder was greatly approved upon by smoothing out lines and almost combining the flat top design of the 2600 with the sloping head of the 2602.
  • Capacity: 16-18 sheets per pass
  • Speed: 28 ft./min.
  • Weight: 111 lbs
  • Hp: 1
  • Throat Width: 10 ½”

Destroyit 2604 Cross Cut is Born

MBM Destroyit 2604 ShredderThe 2604 cross cut shredder is the latest in the 2600 heritage of shredders. It represents an almost perfect marriage of shredder engineering and user features. Although the outward appearance remains the same, this new model features Destroyit’s Electronic Capacity Control or ECC. This is a series of colored lights that fluctuates up and down according to how much paper is being fed. This allows user to feed the optimum amount of paper continuously. Since this new meter lets users know when too much paper is being fed, jamming occurs far less frequently. Another important addition is the internal oiler. Oiling is essential for all cross cut shredders. With the addition of an automatic oiler, customers no longer have to guess if the shredder has been oiled. Also, some tweaks to the gear ratio, allowed engineers at MBM to be able to squeeze out and added 4-6 sheets per pass out of this newer model. Because of these new endurance features, we expect the model 2604 to even outlast the amazing life spans of previous models.
  • Capacity: 22 sheets per pass
  • Speed: 28 ft./min.
  • Weight: 111 lbs
  • Hp: 1
  • Throat Width: 10 ½”
MBM Destroyit ShreddersMBM’s strict dedication to engineering a simple shredding machine has produced the most efficient and longest lasting shredders in their class. The 2604 is one of the most popular office shredders for a reason—it works. It works for a long, long time. If you are considering a new shredder that needs to withstand the abuse of your fellow employees, the 2604 could be the easiest investment you have to make this year.
