The Martin Yale 1711 Electronic Ease-of-Use Autofolder offers some of the latest folding technology available. Forget the hassle of manually configuring your fold plates and fold settings, simply press a few buttons, and the Martin Yale 1711 will automatically configure the fold plates, feed and fold your paper. No need to fan your documents before placing them into the feed tray, all you have to do is put your paper in and watch as it folds up to 9,000 sheets per hour. With 7 different fold types to choose from, including letter, half, z-fold, double parallel, gate, engineering and church, the 1711's electronic controls automatically pre-set letter, legal, and A4 paper sizes.

The paper tray, able to hold up to 150 sheets simultaneously, allows for large folding jobs to be completed quickly. The 1711 automatic folder also features an automatic turn-off sensor that cuts power to the motor once the feed tray is empty of any paper, as well as a conveyor exit table that makes collecting all of your folded documents convenient. The auto jam detect sensor also keeps the 1711 from jamming itself further in the unlikely event of a paper jam, and alerts the user to when a jam has occurred.

Thanks to the enhanced precision skew adjustment, you don't have to worry about your folds coming out incorrectly. The 1711 grants the user easy access to the rollers and offers improved stacking wheels and self-centering paper guides. These features just add to the 1711's simple operation. The conveyor exit table neatly stacks your finished documents for your convenience. Ideal for large mailrooms, associations, and offices, the Martin Yale 1711 proves reliable, user-friendly, and versatile.

What We Think

To get a folder with automated fold plates for just a bit over $1k is extraordinary. In fact, it's so extraordinary, that it made us a bit skeptical at first. The truth is though, that this is a really good folder. We do a lot of testing and research before recommending a product. After some stress testing by our technicians we were comfortable with the 1711, but the true story came when we ran some customer service reports. We've been extremely impressed by the nominal failure rate and return rate on this model. Traditionally, a true automatically adjusting folder would cost more than twice the price of the 1711. As much as we'd love to sell folders that cost over twice the price, we'd recommend taking a hard look at the 1711, because it can do 90% of what the larger auto folders can do. There are a few limitations to this folder model, but if you're doing regular copy paper and your volume is somewhat low, the 1711 is likely going to be the best automatic folder for you.

What we don't like: The Martin Yale 1711 is a great folder, but there are a few reasons you'd want something bigger, such as the 2051. One reason would be larger paper. The 1711 only handles up to legal size (11"x 14") paper. If you need to do 11x17 and need an automatic folder, the Martin Yale 2051 is your best bet (the Martin Yale 1217a & Martin Yale 1812 are manual adjustment folder options that do 11x17 paper). One feature we'd really like to see is a better stacking system. We don't see this as a huge deal, but a longer stacker/conveyor/tray would certainly keep the folded paper a bit neater with less chance of nesting. That being said, if you leave some space on the table behind the machine, we've found the paper doesn't stack too poorly on it's own. The more space you leave, the more paper can stack on the table, and the more hands free the folder becomes.

What we do like: The first thing would have to be the price. For the money, there is really no other folding machine on the market that has automatic fold plates. Beyond that, this isn't just a "cheap" folding machine. This model actually competes with folders that are way more expensive, and has a solid track record too. Another feature that we really like is the manual bypass. This "bypass" allows user to hand feed multiple sheets of paper at once. This is a feature that is actually really rare in the folding machine market. Although manual sheet feeders require a little technique, we find that they are a popular feature with our customers. While most manufacturers have given up on the manual feed option, we're glad to see that Martin Yale still offers this in the 1711.

Q: Will this folder work with glossy paper?

A: The short answer is no. The long answer is "kind-of." For glossy paper you're supposed to use an air-fed paper folder. But since those are so expensive, there are a lot of people who manage to get by using friction folders to run their glossy stock. But it doesn't always work! We recommend calling us at (800) 243-9226 and speaking to a paper folder expert. We'll give instructions for sending samples up for testing.

Q: Can you manually set options for custom folds?

A: You can manually set any fold you like. The machine comes equipped with several common preset folds but you're free to run any customized fold job you need.

Q: Is there any kind of warranty on this product?

A: The manufacturer's warranty protects you for 180-days (parts and labor) against defects in manufacturing. Some other restrictions may apply. We do offer extended service contracts, although the pricing varies by customer location. Please call us at (800) 243-9226 for details.

Q: Is this machine capable of folding multiple sheets at the same time?

A: The Martin Yale 1711 is capable of folding multiple sheets of paper at one time using the manual bypass. Most people doing this are then putting the paper into an envelope, which is a process much better preformed with a folder-inserter. But the 1711 does have a bypass for stapled sets.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Ask a Question
  • Do you have to manually feed if you are folding 3 sheets at a time?

That is correct. Automatically feeding multiple sheets of paper at one time to create folded sets is a function of a folder-inserter, not a paper folder. In the realm of paper folders only the Martin Yale 1217A can do stapled sets with any kind of appreciable speed.

  • I am calling from a public school district. Can we order with a PO number? Thanks, Tammee

We do accept purchase orders from schools! We would need a copy of the PO though, not just the number.
